ORA-12560 under W2K Adv Server

We recently installed Oracle8i Enterprise 8.1.7.0.0. on a dual processor Windows 2000 Adv Server box.

The install seemed to go smoothly and a default database created. However, when I run the Database Configuration Assistant to create a new database it fails while trying to create the database files.

The error is ORA-12560: TNS: protocol adapter error.

A web search returned a number of postings referring to this or similar problems but none I have found that offered a solution.

Any suggestions much appreciated.
