Alter Session Pls Help

Hi Friends, 



i gave the command 


alter session set NLS_DATE_FORMAT='DD-MM-YYYY'; 



it works properly but when i exit and again log in 
the session does not work how can i make the date session permanent. 
is it possible to put it in init.ora file.if yes pls tell me where to place it.
