Are you talking about using Legato Networker to do RMAN backups
*directly* to tape, without staging on disk first?
If so, we tried this about 1.5 years ago. You have to buy the piece of
the Legato Networker software package that works with Oracle. We had
limited success with it. We stumbled upon a bug which would not allow
the backup to be scheduled through Networker, but were able to schedule
it through an oracle cron job. As soon as RMAN sees the "allocate
channel type SBT_TAPE", it goes out and talks to Legato via the
libnwora.so library.
When it worked, it worked pretty slick (recoveries too), but Legato
didn't keep up with oracle versions quickly enough for our upgrades, so
we decided not to use it. The big plus with using it of course, is that
if you have a giant database, you don't need to have all that disk to
stage the RMAN backup set on, and then later send it to tape.
