It is pretty easy in Oracle to do a case insensitive search without using function based indexes been doing it for years. As for ora-1555 haven't had one in more than 5 years and I work daily in Oracle; it isn't too difficult to configure things so you don't get them. Go to the Ask Tom Site (link off the Oracle magazine site) and do a search. Great info there. (also you can get his book which has tons of useful information and is well worth the $50) I would rather occaisionally get the ora-1555 than have so much contention and problems with locking. (Perfect example was the usmint.org site where I tried to fill out their online survey. About 50% of the time I would get a SQL Server error about unable to insert a record because there was a lock already and I lost waiting for the lock to be released. ) Jim
