I use Solaris 8 exclusively for our DBs and while it may have "smart" swap, in practice 8.1.7.1 still seems to consume alot of swap on my machines.

I would stick with (1.5 - 2.0) * RAM. I'm finding at least 50% of my 2*RAM allocation is used up.
