well... i know that newer versions of the big databases (oracle, sybase etc.) do contain support for special binaray formats (office documents etc.). depending the type of content you want to store these might be a good choice for you if you need indexing this binary content.
generally speaking are oodb's better at recursive structrures (i.e. graphs) which must be navigated. if you are more query oriented i would favour relational db's.
i know this is not too much of a help but maybe some points to consider and direct further research. (i hop you have the time for this.)
