NLS settings for 9i

If I am connecting using an Oracle8i client to Oracle 9i,
do I need to use the nls files for 8i or 9i?



I.e. should ORA_NLS33 point to the 8i directory or the 9i directory?



Are the language files version specific?



Any help is appreciated.
