Null extents in DBA_SEGMENTS

What would cause the EXTENTS column in DBA_SEGMENTS to be null? I thought this always had to contain a known value. I've tried analyzing the index in question but it still left EXTENTS null. This is causing an OEM maxextents event to falsely report a pending failure.
