I have been using rman and hp's omniback to backup a 7/24 database for over a year.

Yes, you must put all the tablespaces in backup mode at once to split the mirrors -- it is the only way to insure consistency.

The beauty is you are only in hot backup mode long enough to split the mirrors, then you take everything out of backup mode. We are using an XP512 disk array (500 gb of storage) and the split only takes 1-2 minutes (as long as you have the business copy (aka the second mirror) already synched up with primary disks).

once the split volumes are mounted on the backup server, you use rman to backup that "copy" of the database

If you ever need to do recovery, you can restore to the business copies on the backup server and do a reverse sync to the primary disks. Received on Thu Jul 19 2001 - 01:41:37 CDT
