Listener hangs after building Context index

I'm running Oracle 8.1.7 (patched 1.4) on Windows NT 4.0 sp6a.
When I build context index the index builds but the listener is hung and
needs to be restarted. (The process takes about 10 hours to run so I'm not
sure when the listener checks out.)  Has anyone had this issue?  (*Opened a
TAR with Oracle...just looking for any suggestions.)
