I/O? How would the OS difference change how users interract with the system? (Oh, it's quite possible I'm missing the obvious...I'm like that sometimes)

Well, I only really need the system to run steadily for about 10 hours a day (7am-5pm). If it lasts a week without requiring a reboot, that'd be great. I plan to shut it down over most weekends anyways (seeing as it's a strictly inhouse database).

The queries shouldn't be too demanding, but I'm planning on a system like dual 1Ghz, 1GB RAM, etc.

I had thought of this, but then there's the whole warranty issue. If you have any ideas of a good place to look for corporate machines (servers, not just local newspaper 286s for sale), I will definately check them out.
