Backups are not taken to guard against media failure. They are taken to guard against failure of the system which may include media failure. for example from an earlier thread on control files.

rm /u0*/oradata/dbx/*ctl

Neatly dumped them all for the wrong database - :)

....

no disk failure but database failure necessitating recovery from backup. you can have raid 14million (TM) on this system and you are still left without the proverbial paddle.
