The datafiles get the time stamp on a checkpoint. When there is a log switch the redo file that was just being used is copied to an archived file. I don't know what your backup plan looks like so I won't say delete the older archives. But what I will say is keep enough archives just in case your last backup does not work and you need to go to an older backup. You'll need all the archives after the backup to recover.
