LONG vs. CLOB for XML and other CHAR file types

Hello,

Oracle recommends to store XML file type in CLOBs. Why would I use CLOBs vs. LONGS. I see no difference other than a LONG can hold up to 2 gigs and CLOBs up to 4gigs.

Any data on this would be appreciated.
