You need them for recovery - for example, if you backup each night to tape, you should keep (say) 2 days worth of logs to ensure that you can recover from either the most recent or next to most recent tape.
If you never backup, you need every archive etc...
I wouldn't worry about 3 per day - many sites run 1000's per day.
