When I shutdown normal It tries to shutdown an instance called sar1. sar1 is not started. What does it indicate? So I followed the step you sugested and did startup nomount. It then started sar1 and not sar3. Why is it starting sar1 and not sar3. I have specified N in the last field for sar1 in the oratab file. I am sorry if I'm talking like a Novice. I am. The database was administered previously by somebody who left and I am left with figuring out what is wrong.

 Here is the transcript.
