killing process id on dbstart

We're using the following command to do the startup of our instances



su - $ORA_OWNER -c $ORA_HOME/bin/dbstart &
su - $ORA_OWNER -c "lsnrctl start" >> /var/log/oracle &



While this works, we always have to kill the process id, that was used
to


start this up, because it hangs. Any ideas what is/is not happening?
