       You may have Oracle Trace enabled by default. Symptoms such as you describe were often seen on 7.3.2 bases as a result of Oracle Trace not being turned off.

       Quick check & fix: "cd" to $ORACLE_HOME/otrace/admin . If there are some extremely large files with ".dat" extension (particularly
"regid.dat") this will confirm the above suggestion. Deleting all the
".dat" files should make your symptoms go away.
