Oracle 8i personal edition...or not?

Hello all,

As a way to begin to learn more about Oracle, I think I'm about to purchase the 8i personal edition. My plan is to perhaps take an introductory class after gaining some basic familiarity with this product.

I don't believe that any type of certification would be part of my goal. If my employer decides to move to Oracle (a definite maybe), I'm sure that an experienced Oracle professional would be hired to do this, but I would need to be conversant with the product and the process.

I don't know any Oracle professionals to ask personally, so I ask anyone kind enough to respond: is the 8i strategy a good one? Or, what would you suggest?

Thanks in advance,

David Aman
