If you are running Oracle8 on Solaris SPARC (not Intel) edition you can use Legato Storage Manager which shipped with Oracle8. That fasility provides enough flexibility to performe backups of very large databases directly onto a tape using RMAN. See Oracle8 Bakup and Recovery manual for more infrmation.
