Actually, there are 2 releases:
- Oracle 8i (in fact, 8.1.5)
- Oracle 8.0.6
I won't tell you all the new features of these, but briefly, Oracle 8.0.6 is the standard RDBMS, and 8i is the internet database. Contact your revendor for more informations.

About your actual database, you can use both methods. Upgrading from 7.3.4.x to 8.x is an easy thing (in general), but you can contact Oracle Support Services if you're not sure.
