Character set for copyright and trademark symbols

I'm trying to find a character set I can use which will properly recognize the trademark and copyright symbols. I have been able to successfully use the Western Eurpoean WE8ISO8859P1. But I don't want to have to use this! Has anyone had any luck with an American character set?
