Just a quick addendum, if you shutdown the database with the Services/Stop option, make sure you have the string 'ORA_SHUTDOWN = TRUE' in your NT registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Oracle. Otherwise, it will crash the database.

And you should shut the database down, as you will have to reboot NT after applying the service pack.
