It was supposed to be parallel query, so your memory serves you correctly on that, but in one particular release I thought there was a bug where it needed spatial. Can't find anything on it at the moment, so maybe my memory's going in my old age, but I could swear that's what it was. I remember thinking how odd that you would need spatial for it.
