Enterprise backup utility catalog

Has anyone developed or otherwise accessed scripts to query the backup catalog database to provide information relating to the status of backups for the given databases being serviced?

I would like to perform some basic queries that would provide a recent history of all backups, i.e., their type (database, archive log, pfile, control file), the status (failed, success, warnings), possibly the duration and temporal history.
