Have you made a symlink from /usr/local/jre to the path of jre (/usr/lib/jre)?
What distro are you trying to load 8i on? Go to the particular web page for that distribution and look for any patches they have released for Oracle (e.g., if you are running SuSE 6.2, go to http://www.suse.de/~mha/oracle). There are many bugs in 8.0.5 and 8i install routine that prevent it from loading properly from the default setup.
