I just finished a 20 gig database upgrade from 7.3.?? to 8.0.5. I used the MIG utility with no problem. It took about 2 hours to execute then another 2 hours to re-compile all packages and procedures in this Oracle APPS database. Other non database activities added to this time for APPS.

You can export/import the data as an alternative. Also, it is recommended to perform an export after using the MIG command to convert all the rowid columns properly.
