disk space still used after archive files deleted

We recently upgraded an SAP database server from HPUX 10.20 to 11.0 and Oracle 8.0.4.3 to 8.0.5.1. Since that time we notice that our archive directory keeps filling. Even though the archive files are removed after backups, the HP_UX "bdf" output reports the space as still in use ("du" reports it correctly) HP tells us that an Oracle process must be accessing the files at the time of deletion so the filesystem sees the data blocks as still in use and that this is "not a bug - just the way it works" our question is why wasn't this happening before the upgrade?
