SMON problem

The other night I had a cron job (Solaris) scheduled to take down my
database for a cold backup. The database did not come down as expected.
Checking the alert log, I noticed the following:



  "Waiting for smon to disable tx recovery."



This message appeared over and over again for hours. Any suggestions as
to why?
