Measuring query performance

I would like to measure the performance of a query, but I am not sure how to do this? I would like to do this using SQL/Plus. I have tried to use the "SET TIMING" command, but I am confused with the results that I get back. It says "real 29342". What does real represent - time in milliseconds, microseconds? How do you format the time so it is displayed as minutes:seconds etc?

Also, I would like the time to just execute the SQL statement and not the time to display the contents on the screen? How do I do that?

Thanks.

A newbie,
Farzana
