Since posting my original problem, I've discovered a couple of good sources of information on this and other known problems with the Oracle 8i intall on Linux distributions other that Red Hat (Oracle's primary supported distribution).

They are both probably well known to folks who have been working with Oracle and Linux, but for those (like myself) who are just getting started.....

Regarding my original problem, I found a solution posted on the technet.oracle.com linux forum that worked for me. It had to do with a missing $ORACLE_HOME/network/lib/ldflags file. If you need it and can't find it, let me know and I'll provide a copy of the solution on this forum.

P.S.
SUSE 6.2 uses the 2.2.10 Linux kernel.
