Since posting my original problem, I've discovered a couple of good
sources of information on this and other known problems with the Oracle
8i intall on Linux distributions other that Red Hat (Oracle's primary
supported distribution).
They are both probably well known to folks who have been working with
Oracle and Linux, but for those (like myself) who are just getting
started.....
http://technet.oracle.com
- Follow the link labeled "Free Oracle on Linux Software"
- The "discuss" link takes you to a forum dedicated to
Oracle on Linux.
- You must be a member to view some of the material, but
membership is free and worth while.
http://www.suse.de/~mha/oracle
- This page is maintained by an employee of SUSE, who has
taken it upon himself to find/solve and document any
problems he encounters with getting Oracle and SUSE linux
to work together. From what I've seen, it is the best
single source of info available.
- As of 9/2/99, he is wrapping up a complete cookbook
approach to installing 8i on SUSE 6.2. He has done
this for earlier versions and they seem to be very
well done and complete.
Regarding my original problem, I found a solution posted on the
technet.oracle.com linux forum that worked for me. It had to do with a
missing $ORACLE_HOME/network/lib/ldflags file. If you need it and can't
find it, let me know and I'll provide a copy of the solution on this
forum.
P.S.
SUSE 6.2 uses the 2.2.10 Linux kernel.
