Raw disk usage for Oracle 8

Hello all!

Newbie question: I have been given to understand that Oracle does not support raw disk
usage. I find it hard to believe that Oracle could compete against Sybase and Informix
with such a serious disk I/O bottleneck.

Can someone clarify this for me: Must all Oracle instances use "cooked system" files as
opposed to "raw devices"? Thanks,
