One check further I do have the following
alter database "dbawrk" open
Beginning crash recovery of 1 threads
Recovery of Online Redo Log: Thread 1 Group 1 Seq 243 Reading mem 0
Mem# 0 errs 0: D:\ORANT\DATABASE\LOGDBAW1.ORA
Crash recovery completed successfully
Picked broadcast on commit scheme to generate SCNs
These appear to be normal on an NT system which even though all applications have disconnected is then shutdown and switched off, or even just switched off.
You could set up a shortcut to a script which shutsdown Oracle on your behalf before shutting down NT.
