Hei.
In our place we are having about 20 little LANs and one bigger LAN where database servers are. Those smaller LANs are using internet to connect the servers. To make the traffic go through proxy firewalls we are using IP-IP tunneling and for data protection we are using encryption while data goes through public network. For users this is very transparent solution, they see only one big local area network.
