Leave the service name blank if you're running the Oracle on locally on the
same server as the Oracle database. If you want to set up service names you
need to do some editing of the some of the Oracle files for the TNS Listener
service on the server. You also need to configure the client using Oracle
Net8 Easy Config to either use a local name file or hit an Oracle Name
Server.
NOTE: I primarily work with Oracle 8 Enterprise so some of this may be a little different at the workgroup level. I have run into the same naming problems that you're having with your Workgroup server.
