The installation never stated anything about the /var/opt directory. The Oracle directory was supposed to be created with the root.sh executable. (and yes, i did run it as the root user). I remember early in my career when installing 7.3.3, that I had this problem before. I have installed 7.3.4 and 8.0 many times without problems. Anyway, thanks for your response.
