Can't connect internal in svrmgrl, oracle8

I've just done a fresh install of Oracle 8.0.3 under Irix 6.2 (current patchset). However, the starting database files aren't being created, apparently because svrmgrl is requiring a password on "connect internal". Specifying the only password I gave the installer comes back with a:

SVRMGR> connect internal
Password:
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges

I'm doing this as user oracle (who owns all of the oracle files) and is member of group DBA. Thinking I screwed something up, I even reinstalled the software, but have the same problem still.
