Yes. Raw devices are often no more difficutl to manage than regular file systems for a production database if you do some upfront research and planning.

Most of the bad press given raw devices comes from lack of experience in working with them. Unix file systems are easy to work with and no special knowledge is required, but they really isn't that much to learn about raw devices.

Inexperienced and poor Unix administrators do not like having to do the work to define the raw partitions, but if your system has a logical file manager and OS stripping is in use then they is almost no extra work on their part anyway according to my administrators.

My partner handles defining the raw partitions for our administrators.
