sql*net tcp protocol

Can anyone tell me where to get the specifications for the protocol, sql*net is using on a tcp/ip network ? What I am looking for is not how to set sql*net up to connect using this protocol, but how to open my own socket to the server and therefore not needing an sql*net installation on the client.
