Further info.

The connection is being made o.k. and the query

select privilege#,level from sysauth$ connect by grantee#=prior privilege# and privilege#>0 start with (grantee#=:1 or grantee#=1) and privilege#>0

is being run on the remote database.

The link failure occurs after this.

The calling session then gets a "end of channel ORA-03131" error.
