The major hardware I've used over the last few years has all run Oracle 7
and 8 well. I'm also UK based - London.
On UNIX, HP-UX (HP) and AIX (IBM). I've not used Sun Solaris, so maybe someone can step in here to help on that.
On NT (3.51 Server and 4.0 Server) we use Compaq rack-mounted kit (P2 based, now).
I *honestly believe any* of these systems could suit your needs. As well as many others. Take a good hard look at *local* suppliers who have a *good track-record* and *customer sites running Oracle* that you can look at. Also consider getting in an outside *independent consultant* to help you (that's my job, but unfortunately I'm fully booked until next year) - it's good to have someone cutting through the bullsh*t for you, and vendors really do cut the bull when you turn up with a consultant with 15 years or so experience.
Walk away from any vendor who tells you only *their* system will suit you.
Get back if you need help with any specific questions.
All the best.
MotoX.
