i don't know about dbAssist, but i had problems with NetEasyConfig
i was a gpf right at the beginning. the problem is that Oracle Java VM has a bug: it needs at least 800x600 AND at least 256 colours
the machine that was having trouble had only 16 colours. when changed to 256 everything worked fine.
since you say you have a server box, it may be the same error.
