personal oracle 8 objects

I've just installed PO8 and have sstrange problem. Logged in as system when I say:

describe user_objects

I get" table or view does not exist", yet when I say:

select * from user_objects

I get the rows returned that I'm expecting. anybody any idea what's going on ?
