Oracle actually recommends RAW devices in the installation guides, if you
read the fine print.
I use file systems for small, lightly loaded databases. For large datawarehouses and I/O intensive databases I use raw for everything except archive logs and init files - as long as the target system has an LVM and decent backup software that supports raw devices and *good UNIX people who are happy with dd, LVM, Oracle' etc.
Oh, and be careful about restores, as you might have to skip LVM control blocks, like the first 4K on IBM's AIX. Make sure you test some full recoveries, and do it periodically.
NB. For some systems (like Parallel Server on SP) you have no choice, you must use raw devices for everything.
MotoX.
