SMON

Hi!
The Oracle Concept Manual states that SMON can be called by other processes if teh need arises. can anyone tell me which processes can do so. one process which i can think of is RECO...can anyone tell me what is the manner in which it does so and a scenario in which teh need to call SMON may arise.
