I've tried to set the nls_date_format to 'DD-MON-YYYY' in the initorcl.ORA file (Oracle 7.2.2) and it seems to be ignored what am I doing wrong.

If I look at the parameter file then it tells me that nls_date_format = 'DD-MON YYYY' however selecting sysdate from dual always returns the 9 character date format.

Alter session to set nls_date_format always works fine.

How do I get the instance to recognise this new format or can't I.

Please anyone help if you can i'm completely baffled here.
