Er, just done 5 installs of Oracle 7.3.4 this weekend on AIX 4.1.5. So read
up! :-)

Create a *new* AIX partition (at least 500M) to hold your new release. Do
not remove any of the old stuff first. If you have to - because you are
short of disk space - do a FULL COLD BACKUP of EVERYTHING. Better still, DO
THAT ANYWAY. AND DO IT TWICE TO SEPARATE TAPES.

Read the AIX install guide, it is very good. Read it BEFORE you start. And then come up with a proper PLAN. Don't try to do it all on the fly. Read the migration manual, although if you are coming from V6 you may have to imp/exp. Again, check the manuals before you start.

Normal install is a parition mounted as '/u01', but the choice is yours, really Read the manuals on OFA installs. Make yours compliant with it. Make sure you use multiple mount points on different drives, and mirror the redo log (online) and control files across DIFFERENT drives. How you split the rest is up to you, but try separating: SYSTEM, REDO, TEMP, DATA, INDEXES, ARCHIVE LOGS onto separate drives as a minimum.

Yes, get in an Oracle consultant for the day to help you out. No joke. It will be well worth the little outlay, IMHO.
