What are the snp processes

Dear All,

I have just followed the installation guide for a third-paty package which included the full Oracle installation notes, and the init.ora parameters to be used.

What is it that determined that 4 snp processes are used (an init.ora parameter and/or an Oracle product) ?

What are they ?

Where can I read more about them ?

I was thinking that they were either something to do with the distributed option (possibly snapshot processes ??), or they were something to do with job scheduling within Oracle. Whichever, I can't find any info in the few manuals I have here (I'm waiting for the documentation CD to be posted on).

The database is Oracle 7.3.3 and the system is an RS6000 running AIX 4.3.

TIA --
