you're quite right. Using Linux/Sybase in large companies is quite a risk for the chair you are sitting on. But I (yet) consider Sybase (or whatever database server) on any PC not as a suitable solution for large companies anyway. Not even using SCO Unix as OS basis.
The other way round I consider Sybase/Linux a suitable solution for some smaller installations in smaller companies where you might use SCO Unix or WinNT instead. And in these companies, I believe you'll find (as I do) that the management is sufficiently informed what's going on with their database server and is carrying the fundamental decisions that are being made.
When you are in a situation where someone kicks you off your chair in case of a database breakdown you'd better consider installing a failover system anyway .... ;-)
