Cloning vs replication/snapshots

Can the snapshot/replication facility be used in place of cloning to duplicate a database? I have to duplicate an 18 gig database and am looking for the best way to do this. I am familiar with cloning and have used this method repeatedly.

In going thru the available doc on snapshots and replication it appears to best be used for a few tables across multiple nodes not for 2000+ tables over a single instance.
